Our Father’s Table
Luke 13:29
“And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north and from the south, and shall sit down in the Kingdom of God.”
We sacrifice our time and our health chasing our tails and teaching our kids to chase theirs. Ultimately the things we are chasing after really don't matter.
In America, we are teaching our kids to never be content, to want more, that bigger is better, and to do whatever it takes. Our parents and grandparents raised bigger families in smaller houses and had less but seemed to have more.
We are slowly killing ourselves and the family unit with our busy lives and our chasing. We no longer have time to sit together every night and to really be part of each other's lives. We are sacrificing everything but gaining nothing.
It reminds me of a Dave Matthews Song "Ants Marching," "When all the little ants are marching, Red and black antennas waving, They all do it the same, They all do it the same way; No words exchanged, No time to exchange."
As a culture we need to focus on this: satisfaction comes not from having what you want but rather focusing on wanting what you have.
I challenge myself and everyone else to find something you'd like to change and implement it. We strive every night to eat dinner together, no matter the time.
I am going to strive to have more Sobremesa with my children and family because ultimately that pause in the day to be present holds so much for our future; preparing us for the ultimate feast at our fathers table, sitting down in the kingdom of God.
